Who leads each group
Group A is the hosts’ to lose, with Mexico and South Korea both winning. Scotland’s 1-0 over Haiti put them above Brazil and Morocco in Group C, one of the early surprises. Germany lead Group E on a vast goal difference after their 7-1 win, and Sweden top Group F thanks to a 5-1 thrashing of Tunisia. France made the perfect start in Group I, beating Senegal 3-1.
The tightest groups
Groups B, G and H could not be closer, with all four teams in each level on a single point after a run of draws. In the 48-team format, where goal difference is the first tie-breaker and the best third-placed sides advance, those groups will go to the wire. Live tables are always current on our standings page.
How qualification works
The top two in each of the 12 groups go through, joined by the eight best third-placed teams, sending 32 of the 48 nations into the knockout rounds. That means even a single win, or sometimes a single point, can be enough to stay alive.
