How Group E Was Decided

Germany secured top spot with six points from their first two matches: a 7-1 win over Curasao on Matchday 1 and a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast on Matchday 2. They could afford to lose their final game and still top the group, which is exactly what happened. Ecuador beat Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium through Nilson Angulo and Gonzalo Plata, but Germany had already secured first place.

Ivory Coast beat Curasao 2-0 in the simultaneous fixture, Nicolas Pepe scoring twice at Lincoln Financial Field. That gave Ivory Coast six points, level with Germany but behind on head-to-head record from their Matchday 2 meeting. Ivory Coast advance as runners-up.

Ecuador won over Germany earned them four points for the group, enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams across the 48-team tournament. Read the full reports: Ecuador 2-1 Germany and Ivory Coast 2-0 Curasao.

Germany: Group Winners, Into the Round of 32

Germany arrive in the knockouts as Group E winners. Ten goals scored across three group games, only two conceded. Their Round of 32 fixture is scheduled for June 29 at Boston Stadium. They are among the more dangerous sides still in the tournament.

Ivory Coast: Second Place, Through to the Last 32

Ivory Coast beat Ecuador on Matchday 1, lost to Germany on Matchday 2, then needed to beat Curasao on Matchday 3 to secure their place. Nicolas Pepe delivered with two goals and Les Elephants are in the Round of 32.

Ecuador: Third Place, But Through as Best Third

Ecuador beat Germany 2-1 in one of the group stage most striking results but finish third in Group E with four points. In the 48-team World Cup format, the eight best third-placed teams across all 12 groups advance to the Round of 32. Ecuador four points, backed by a positive goal difference from the Germany win, are enough to see them through.
