Uzbekistan vs Colombia Prediction: Luis Diaz Faces the Debutants

uzbekistan-vs-colombia-world-cup-2026-preview

Preview, published 17 June 2026. Kick-off 10pm ET, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City.

Uzbekistan vs Colombia closes Group K’s opening day, and our prediction is a Colombia win, 2-0, with Luis Diaz and James Rodriguez carrying too much quality for World Cup debutants Uzbekistan at the Estadio Azteca. Uzbekistan are a feel-good story, at their first finals under World Cup winner Fabio Cannavaro, but Colombia are the clear favourites in this one.

Our predictionColombia 2-0 Uzbekistan

What is at stake

Colombia reached the last Copa America final and arrive for a seventh World Cup hoping to better their quarter-final run of 2014. Uzbekistan, by contrast, are making history simply by being here, having qualified for a first senior World Cup after years of near-misses, losing just one of 16 qualifiers. Under Fabio Cannavaro they will be organised and hard to break down.

Players to watch

Colombia’s threat starts with Luis Diaz, one of the world’s best wingers, electric in one-on-ones and a consistent scorer for his country. James Rodriguez remains the creative hub, pulling the strings in the final third. For Uzbekistan, Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov is the standout, a quick, aggressive centre-back who will need to be at his best against Diaz.

Our prediction

Colombia have the edge in almost every department and should control the game. Uzbekistan’s discipline may keep it tight for a while, but Diaz and James have the class to unlock a deep block. We are calling it 2-0 to Colombia, with the debutants giving a good account of themselves without quite holding on.

What is next

Group K’s other opener, Portugal against DR Congo, is earlier the same day. Follow the table on our standings page, see the full slate in our June 17 preview, and the format in our complete World Cup 2026 guide. A full report lands after the final whistle.
