Olwan’s History Goal Not Enough: Austria Edge Jordan 3-1

How Austria survived a Jordan scare

Romano Schmid’s long-range strike on 20 minutes gave Austria the start they wanted, and for an hour they looked in control of a routine opener against World Cup debutants. Jordan, though, had other ideas. Ali Olwan curled in a brilliant equaliser early in the second half, the first goal in Jordan’s World Cup history, and Levi’s Stadium suddenly had a contest on its hands.

Austria’s response came through misfortune rather than craft: Yazan Al-Arab turned the ball into his own net on 76 minutes to restore the lead. Jordan pushed for a leveller deep into stoppage time, but a VAR review awarded Austria a penalty in the 12th minute of added time, and Marko Arnautović held his nerve to make it 3-1 and put the result beyond doubt.

Olwan writes Jordan into the history books

Whatever the result, Ali Olwan’s equaliser means something lasting: Jordan’s first goal at a World Cup, scored in their very first match at the tournament. It is the kind of moment debutant nations remember long after the scoreline fades, and a sign Jordan can compete in Group J even after the late defeat.
